Does anyone not teach grammar, sentence diagramming, etc?

I grew up in Germany and studied two foreign languages to fluency without ever diagramming a single sentence. I see diagramming as *one* possible tool, but one I do not require. We got a solid English grammar instruction without diagramming, and I frequently notice that my use of English grammar is better than that of many native speakers ...

Diagramming was designed specifically for English, so you might have to revise some rules for other languages and maybe even the formatting. It would probably be better to see if there was a version that was created just for the language, or you might use the methods linguists use though I don't know how hard that is to learn.

I recently found these two sites with diagramming how-to: Sentence Diagramming and Guide to Diagramming Sentences. I am new to diagramming, though, so I cannot say how much material these two sites cover and whether they can be used for a standalone unit study. HTH in some way..

Sentence diagramming is incredibly useful around here. Lazy kid who doesn't want to revise anything he writes EVER: "I like that sentence. I like the way it sounds." Parent/teacher who believes that good writers make choices; it doesn't just "flow." :001_smile: "Really. Why do you like it?" Kid: "No reason. I just like it."

There is no sentence diagramming on the SAT. there are no questions about grammatical terms or rules. There are two types of questions that require grammar knowledge (but most of these questions can be solved even by students who did not have formal grammar but a great instinctive feel for language): 1.

I have been presented with the following sentence, and can not figure out how to parse and diagram it. "The grass looked like a magic carpet." - EB White At first glance, I thought the sentence would break down as follows: The (adj) grass (noun) looked (linking verb) like (?) a (adj) magic (adjec...

My son is near the end of FLL 3. We are flying through it, but he likes diagramming sentences and could do something more challenging. Can anyone suggest something for us to move onto? I know that we could go onto to FLL 4 or Rod and Staff (which we may do eventually), but I thought it would be f...

Yes, because diagramming helps the student see the interrelationships between the words. Two adverbs or two prepositional phrases can play very different roles in a sentence but MCT's 4-level analysis treats them as the same. The diagram will have them coming off the words being modified, making it obvious what they are doing in the sentence.

Also keep in mind that these are helpful but might not be entirely accurate. I used one with the sentences we were diagramming for Classical Writing and there were times that it couldn't figure it out without simplifying it first and there were other times I had to scroll through their possible diagrams to find one that really worked, and still other times it was just wrong.
