Christmas Card Etiquette

Everyone enjoys receiving Christmas cards. For many people, sending and receiving Christmas cards are the only way to stay in touch with family members or friends who live far away or have moved away. The most favorite holiday cards are personal photo cards which are created using personal pictures pasted on the front. The inside of the holiday photo card highlights a personal printed Christmas season message.

Christmas cards are simply the best and most unique way to reach out to all your family members and friends, but especially those you have neglected to keep in touch with on a regular basis. Generally, cards are sent to anyone you know and that includes friends, neighbors, work associates and of course family members. There’s really no restriction to the number of people to whom you truly desire to send Christmas cards.

You probably should start compiling updated addresses and gathering favorite family pictures as soon as possible, like as early as the first part of November. You can feel free to begin mailing the Christmas cards any time after Thanksgiving. Most people don’t mind receiving early Christmas cards and tend to appreciate them more when they mostly arrive before or at the beginning of the holiday season. Normally, holiday cards should arrive before Christmas day, but in practice, you have until at least the first of January. After that, you may as well wait until next year.

For photo cards, find a professional looking photograph of your family or your children. People love to keep track of how your children are growing, so including just a photo of your children is very common too. Including your family name and a personalized holiday verse printed on the inside of the card is a great way to personalize a holiday card.

What should you say in a Christmas card? As you know, the main point of sending a card for any occasion is to show that you remember the person or family and to wish them well. If you want to communicate a great deal of information, then you may want to write a letter or send an email. Keep your Christmas card message simple. As mentioned above, if you create a personalized card, you include your Christmas wish or holiday verse right in the printed text of the card. It is not necessary to spend a lot of money on a Christmas card in order for it to have the desired effect. The main thing that makes a card special is being remembered. Tell your friend or family member that you are thinking of them, that you hope they are having a great holiday season, express your love for them, or express a simple thought to them such as a fond holiday memory. But again, don’t be too wordy. At the same time, write something that shows that you took the time enough to care about what you included in the card. Don’t just say something meaningless like “Happy Holidays”. Put a little effort into what you are going to say.

Should your card be expensive? No, it does not have to be expensive. As mentioned above, receiving a picture and a nice colorful card is fun and nice, but you are not going to impress anyone by getting the most expensive card that money can buy. Be tasteful, creative, and thoughtful. A little humor is okay too as long as you don’t go overboard with it.

Have fun sending your cards. Stay organized with your names and addresses. Don’t feel like you need to send Christmas cards to everyone, but if you feel like sending one, go ahead. Should you send a reply card to every card you receive? Again, it is nice to do so if you want to, but you shouldn’t feel obligated to do so. Do it from your heart.
