Christmas movies have been around since the beginning of cinema, and many families enjoy gathering together during the holidays to watch Christmas movies, spend time together, and get in the holiday spirit.
Some of the best Christmas movies are the old classics. These movies, made in another time, feature good messages and are entertaining as well. The following are some classic family friendly Christmas movies the entire family will enjoy watching together.
It’s a Wonderful Life
It’s a Wonderful Life is a Christmas classic for the whole family and a favorite of many generations. In this movie, James Stewart plays George Bailey, a man frustrated with the direction his life has taken and who is prepared to take his own life on Christmas Eve, but an angel appears and shows him a vision of what the world would be like if he had never been born. This classic movie may sound depressing, but it’s great for people of all ages and teaches us to acknowledge hardships and difficulties in life but at the same time, to recognize the importance of friendship and celebrating life. Interestingly enough, this popular movie won no awards and was not popular when released, yet has grown into one of the most-loved movies of our day.
Miracle on 34th Street
This classic follows the story of Kris Kringle, who discovers that the man playing Santa at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is drunk. Kris is then persuaded by the cynical, non believing events director, Doris, to play Santa temporarily. He is such a hit that he begins playing Santa at Macy’s and even befriends Doris and her daughter Susan. However, Doris soon finds that Kris actually believes he is the real Santa Claus and begins to have misgivings about him. However, soon people around him, including the equally non-believing Susan, begin to see that there is something very different about Kris. But soon Kris is committed to a mental hospital until Doris’ friend Fred arranges a formal hearing to prove he is the real Santa Claus and get him out of the institution. This is an entertaining movie about the power of believing.
A Christmas Carol
There are many versions of this Christmas classic, based on the Charles Dickens novel. It teaches the true meaning of Christmas as the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, a lonely old man who seems to take pleasure in making everyone around him miserable, is visited by three angels: the Past, Present, and Future, on Christmas Eve. Together, with Scrooge’s humble worker Bob Cratchit, they help him to realize the true meaning and importance of Christmas.
White Christmas
This Christmas musical features Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye in the lead roles as a song and dance team who got together during WWII and then become popular performers. They team up with a sister act, becoming romantically involved in the process, in order to put on a big show and raise money to help the failing ski resort lodge run by their retired and beloved general from the war. The music and dancing are lively and fun and the story touching. The whole family will enjoy this movie.
These classic family friendly Christmas movies have been enjoyed by families for years. Great for everyone, these are just a few classic holiday movies, and watching them is a great way to spend time together during the holiday season.
