Are you ready to share the spirit of the holiday season with your kids and loved ones? Homemade decorations make fun projects to do with your kids and they’re a great way to save money on Christmas decorations this year.
When you are thinking about the Christmas decorations you want to share with others, one thing you need to keep in mind is why you celebrate Christmas? What does Christmas mean to you? Are you a religious person? Do you celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ?
If you are religious, a few religious decorations like a nativity scene would be fun to make and appropriate, too. With the nativity scene, there are several different ways to create it. Some people like to carve their nativity scene out of wood. This is a beautiful way to share the spirit of Christmas with others. It does take awhile to carve out your own nativity scene and you will need to have some woodworking skills. Another way to share the nativity with your loved ones is by purchasing some clear glass ornaments. Sketch Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus and place the sketch inside the glass globe. Try to position the ornament next to white lights on the Christmas tree to make it shine. If you have kids, create a paper nativity scene with some cardstock paper. The paper must be large enough to fold in half and then cut 3 slits at different levels on the paper. Now, use some more cardstock and cut out Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus on the first level. On the second level, cut out some livestock along with the shepherds. On the third level, cut out the 3 wise men and an angel. Have your children color in the different characters. This is a fun way to teach your children about the true meaning of Christmas while decorating your home at the same time.
If you aren’t religious, but you still like to celebrate the Christmas holiday with your loved ones, decorate your home with Christmas carolers, Santa Claus, reindeer and gingerbread men. Make your own Christmas stockings this year and decorate them with snowmen, Santa Claus and other Christmas themes. If you are a good seamstress, make a red and green table runner that is trimmed with lace.
A snowman is one essential decoration you need to have. If you are lucky enough to have snow, head outside with the kids and build a snowman, complete with twigs for arms, a carrot for a nose and rocks or charcoal pieces for eyes. This is a fun way to bond with the kids and it’s a great way to share the fun spirit of the Christmas season with your neighbors.
Baking is another important part of the Christmas season. Create gingerbread men with your kids. Making a colorful gingerbread house with the kids and allowing them to decorate it with M & M’s, licorice, gumdrops and graham crackers. This is a lot of fun to do as a family and it makes lasting Christmas memories. Pick a few different holiday treats to make with the kids. Some fun edibles you can make with the kids include chocolate balls, caramels, candy canes, white chocolate popcorn and homemade candies using molds.
Make a list of 24 different things you can do with the kids each day until Christmas comes. Write each item down on a different piece of paper and wrap each one in a small box. Number the boxes so your kids know what days to open the boxes. The paper inside the box should include things like “go see Christmas lights” or “make a gingerbread house”. This is one of the easiest ways to share the spirit of Christmas with your family. Get creative with your Christmas countdown this year and share your love for the holidays with your kids.
