Making Your Own Garter

There are lots of things that you have to make or buy for your wedding. One thing is a garter. There are lots of ways to make them, or buy them. Let’s look at some great crafts for making your own garter.

If you aren’t prone to sewing, a good idea might be to just buy a ready made garter and then decorating it yourself. You can buy one from a craft store or even a supercenter will usually have them in their wedding aisle. Add your own personal touch. It doesn’t have to be something extravagant, but something that makes it a little nicer, more personal to the bride and groom, and something that doesn’t look like it was just bought.

If you are literally going to make your own, you will need a few staple things. Get some elastic, about ¼ inch to a ½ inch wide, double faced satin ribbon, probably about 5/8 of an inch to an inch wide. You can use any color you want, but white is the usual color with other parts being colorful, but it is up to you. This will be your base for the garter. To figure out how long you will need to buy the elastic, measure the bride’s leg and buy a little extra to work with.

You will need to use white thread. Cut the elastic so that it is the perfect size. Sew the elastic together. Cut the satin ribbon to fit around the elastic. If you want and if you think it will make it easier, just sew the ribbon on before you sew up the elastic. Whichever way you like best will work. Remember to use white thread. You don’t want to see the thread on the garter.

Then buy lace, trim, and ribbon. You will want to buy things that are classy and that are the wedding colors. It will be a nice way to tie it in to the wedding ceremony. You don’t want to overdo it so don’t completely cover the garter in ribbon and lace and have it a foot long when you pick it up. It should be small and discreet and not dragging on the floor. Have the lace go around the garter and have the trim or ribbon weave in and out of the garter.

To cover any seams that might be showing, make little flowers from lace. You can just scrunch up the lace and hot glue it on or sew it on. Don’t forget about using things like embellishments, rhinestones, and pearls. They look classy and lovely.

When you make a garter, remember that it should be classy and not a joke. It shouldn’t be made to symbolize or remember a fun time you and the bride or groom had. It should be something classy and beautiful that represents a wedding and the joining of two people.
