Northwest Indian Totem Pole

Switch to Desktop/Mobile View

There is one particular craft that you can make and most children have seen that originated from the Northwest coastal Indian groups; the totem pole. A real totem pole is a sculpture carved from great trees, generally cedar along the Pacific northwest coast of North America. Some totem poles may recount familiar legends, lineage, or other notable events. You don’t need wood to make these fun Native American crafts however. All you need are some left over toilet paper rolls, some extra paper, and some paint to decorate them with. You can have kids tell a story through their totem pole, or just have them decorate with the colors they like the most.
