Plastic canvas has been around for a long time, but many people are remembering the times they saw it as a child and revitalizing the art with new ideas and more color and flare than before. Here are some plastic canvas craft ideas that are fast and easy to make.

There are many craft ideas that can be made by almost anyone with plastic canvas, a needle and some yarn. The options are nearly limitless, but here are some examples of ideas to help get you started.

Reading is a hobby for many people all over the country and bookmarks are important for anyone who doesn’t have time to sit down and read an entire book at once. Creating a plastic canvas bookmark is fast and easy and can be done by almost anyone. All it takes is a thin piece of plastic canvas, some colored yarn, a needle and a planned out idea. The bookmark has to start with a plan or a pattern. Even if the plan is to have the entire bookmark be one solid color, you need to have in mind a way to cover the canvas effectively and without wasting too much yarn. It is also important to know what both sides of the bookmark should look like because doing too much back and forth can make the back unattractive and the bookmark could also end up much thicker than desired. This is especially important to consider because a bookmark that is too thick can damage a book’s binding.

Baskets are another easy and fast project to make with plastic canvas. They only require a little more effort and planning than some other projects. You need to decide on the size you would like the basket to be and then cut out the pieces to the appropriate size. You will also want to make sure that you have enough plastic canvas left for the handles that will allow you to carry around the basket. The basket can be short or tall, skinny or wide and in almost any color and design. One thing that is very important with the basket is reinforcing the seams and especially where the handles attach so that they will be strong enough to carry things around.

Christmas ornaments are also fast and easy to make with plastic canvas. One design that is very fun to make is a little mouth that squeezes open and closed and that can hold small pieces of candy. This is made by cutting 3 pieces of plastic canvas the same size and stitching the edges together to form a ‘mouth’ that, when squeezed on the cheeks will open and reveal the contents. This is a fun item to have on the Christmas tree with Hershey’s kisses or other candies inside for the kids to eat during the holidays. After you have made the mouth, all you need to do is attach a matching piece of yarn to the top corner and then hand it from the tree. Another great Christmas tree ornament is a small picture frame. This can be made by cutting out a piece of plastic canvas like a frame with the inside hole the size of the picture you would like to see. The design can have writing on it to designate the year the picture was taken and the ornament made or could even have a special message to the recipient. A piece of backing will also be necessary to hold the picture in place and to give a finished look to the project. These are only a few among the many fast and easy plastic canvas crafts that can be found in books and online.
