Bean bags have been around for a very long time and have made great toys for kids all over the world. They are fairly simple to make and are also very durable making them a great way for kids to participate in making something they will use for a long time. Designs and patterns can be very simple or very complex and interesting. But no matter what you are looking for in your bean bag craft here are some ideas to help you adapt it to kids to make them.
Bean bags can be very simple and one of the easiest things to make. A basic rectangle or square is the easiest shape but you can also move up to geometric shapes for slightly older children and teenagers. This simple square or rectangle shape can be just a bean bag but can also double as a pillow for dolls or other toys. You will need several things to make your bean bag. Felt is the most common material used to make them for kids because it is easier to work with than most fabrics on a sewing machine. Felt comes in many different colors and patterns and any kind will do. Cut two pieces of felt out in the shape you would like for the final product and cut it a little larger so that you have room to sew the edges together. You will also need glue (hot glue works best) or a needle and thread to attach the two sides together. The filler material that you use to make the bean bag can, of course, be beans but other things with a similar texture can be used. Rice is a good alternative and plastic beads can also work quite well for the filler. To fill the bean bag with the material, sew or glue all of the sides but one and leave a large enough hole to pour the filler in. When you have filled the bag to the desired firmness, finish the rest of the bean bag and sew it shut. This is a very simple craft and can be completed with only a few hours or an afternoon. It can be a great project for a rainy day or snow day when the kids can’t play outside and you don’t just want them to play video games all day.
