Crafting For Beginners

Switch to Desktop/Mobile View

Crafting can be fun and very easy, as long as you don’t try to take on too much project too quickly; if you don’t have the necessary skills for the particular craft you’re interested in, you can learn the necessary skills step-by-step. While they might seem childish and not worth creating, simple projects are great for novice crafters, in part because you will get to enjoy crafting something you can be proud of with minimal practice, expense and expertise. Here are some great examples of crafts that are perfect for beginners:

Wood Working

While wood working is not for everyone, if you already have a few planks of wood and basic woodworking tools that you feel confident using, you can create any number of great crafts. A simple plank of wood cut to side and sanded for safety can, with the addition of pegs or clothespins and maybe some paint or a stencil, become a family message board where you can display important notes, your kid’s school projects, phone messages and the like. Once you’ve created this great, functional piece, try your hand at some other simple wood working crafts such as a memory or shadow box frame or cutting out animal or letter shapes with a jig saw.

Sewing

Many people finding sewing to be a very intimidating, never mind learning to sew crafts. However, learning the basics of sewing is not just a useful life skill; it can also be helpful in creating many worthwhile crafts. Beginners can easily create a number of useful crafts with a sewing machine and some spare material; a bean bag, for example. To create a bean bag, you will need two matching pieces of material. To make the bean bag, simply turn the 2 fabric pieces pattern side in, use straight pins to secure the areas you’re not sewing, then sew the edges together leaving a small hole for filling the bag. Once you’ve done this, turn the bag right side out, fill the bag with bean bag fill then sew the small opening closed. You can use your new found sewing skills to make many useful crafts, including pillowcases; you could even parlay them into quilting.

Wreath Making

Wreaths are very simple, easy-to-make crafts that you can embellish to your heart’s content, to create a great, seasonal home decor item. You can turn a simple, inexpensive wicker wreath from your local craft store into a fun, seasonal home decor item. Decorate a summer wreath with sea shells or other sea-related decor such as mini flip-flops or a little bottle of sand or decorate a fall wreath with colorful leaves and pine cones. These are just two of a wide variety of themes that cover every season and holiday. With one or two materials strategically placed or wrapped around your wreath, you can create a simple, elegant decoration for your home.

Holiday Decor and Gifts

The holidays are a great time to pick up crafting as a hobby. Many people enjoy making their own holiday decor or giving crafts as gifts. Seasonal projects for beginners are easy to find during the holidays. A simple jar filled with candy or a hand-painted ornament can become a great gift or decoration for your home. With creativity and seasonal materials, you’ll be creating crafts you will be proud to give as gifts or display in your home.
