Macaroni is a fun pasta to eat and to play with and there are many different crafts that can be made using macaroni. Sheep are also interesting and cute for many people to look at. Here is a craft that combines the interesting factors of macaroni and sheep to make a cute and fun craft.
To start out with, you will need to gather all of your supplies for the project before you begin. Many people have macaroni somewhere around the house, but you may need to make a shopping trip for some of the other items before you can begin. Of course, you’ll need macaroni to make this craft in addition to clothespins, cardboard, black felt, paint and white glue. You’ll need to begin by cutting out the shapes that will form the body of the sheep. The shapes are simple and can be cut by children if they are able to use scissors. Cut out a 3 inch circle and a 1 ½ inch diameter circle from the cardboard. The larger circle will eventually become the body of the sheep, and the smaller of the two will be the head. You will need to have white and black paint for this project. Paint the body of the sheep white on both sides of the cardboard. Use paint that will not peel or flake off or the cardboard and make sure that the cardboard you are using isn’t slick and that paint will be able to stick to it. Then paint the top smaller circle that will be the head black. After the black paint is dry, paint the top 1/3 of the circle white.
Take the two clothes pins you will be using for the legs and take them apart so you don’t get paint on the springs. Paint them black on all sides and make sure that you have all of the different areas of the clothespins covered. When they are dry, put them back together so you can use them on the craft. Glue the clothespins to the bottom of the body of the sheep and this will be used for the legs.
With the white glue, attach macaroni to the body of the sheep to make it look like swirly and curly hair. Also glue macaroni to the top part of the head that you painted white. When the macaroni is all attached and the glue has dried, paint the macaroni white as well. This will give the appearance of fur on the sheep and adds interest to the whole project. When you have finished putting on the macaroni for the body, it is time to move on to the details and other parts of the body. Cut two pieces in the shapes of sheep ears from the black felt and glue them to the back of the head so that they can be seen from the front. You can also glue two googley eyes on the head just below the white part. Make them as small or as large as you like for your own sheep. You can also paint a nose on the face with pink paint and then glue the head to the back of the body. All you have to do after that is wait for everything to dry and then you have your very own macaroni sheep. When you are making the sheep, turn it into a learning opportunity for your children and teach them various things about sheep. You could help them learn about wool and that the fur or fleece taken from sheep is cleaned and made into fabric that can help keep us warm and dry.
