Making Christmas Wreaths with The Kids

Switch to Desktop/Mobile View

Christmas is a wonderful time to spend some extra time making some fun Christmas memories with your children. When you think of Christmas, what are some of the typical decorations that come to mind? Amid stockings, Christmas trees, candy canes and twinkle lights, the Christmas wreath is an important part of the holiday season. Looking at your Christmas wreath, is it time to update it? Do you need a new one? You can make an elaborate Christmas wreath, or you can spend some time creating a fun Christmas wreath with the kids that you can display or give away to your neighbors.

The Soda Can wreath

Grab 3 empty soda cans and incorporate them into a Christmas wreath. Use an old wreath or start from scratch. Eventually, you’ll be gluing the soda cans into the center of the wreath to look like 3 Christmas carolers. Begin by spray painting the cans white, black or tan. Once they have dried, paint a small line of red around the mouth of the can. Glue two eyes above the mouth. Pick up some fake hair and a bit of cloth to cover the body of the can at a craft store. Glue the cans to the center of the wreath. Once they are glued, you can then decorate the rest of the wreath. Get some foam and cut out choir books for the carolers to hold. Glue some snowflakes to the side of the wreath along with some other things like a Christmas tree, Santa Claus and other Christmas-related items. Once you have finished the wreath, spray a few areas with a bit of snow in a can. Flocking the wreath will help it fit in with the rest of your Christmas decorations.

The Candy wreath

This is a fun Christmas decoration for kids. You will need to pick up some Twizzlers along with several other types of candy at your local grocery store. Look around for a chocolate Santa Claus and reindeer. Once you have candy, you are ready to begin. You will need a glue gun or some Elmer’s glue to attach the candy to the wreath. Layout a bunch of licorice to decide how big or small you would like the wreath to be. Candy wreaths tend to work better if they are kept small. Bend the licorice into a circle. You will need about 5-10 licorice per strand in order to make it thick enough to hold other candies on its surface. Twist the licorice around each other and glue the pieces to make the licorice stick together. Once the licorice is bent into shape and glued, use some garland or some metal wire to twist around the licorice to hold it in place. After it has dried properly, you can start decorating it. Have your kids place different candies all over the wreath. Try to find a candy that says ‘Merry Christmas’ on it somewhere and you can properly position it on the wreath.

The Pine Cone wreath

The pine cone wreath is another simple wreath you and the kids can create together. Go outside and gather a bunch of pine cones. You can also cut off some branches with pine needles on them, though they are often hard to work with. You may wish, because it is a little easier to work with, to stick to a wooden, store bought wreath. You will need some garland that you can wrap around the wreath. Spray some snow in a can on the pine cones and glue 3 or 4 of them on the wreath. Add some holly berries and mistletoe to the wreath along with some small bells or chimes and hang it on the front door.
