Decorating a Christmas Stocking for Your Pet

If you have a family pet, the holidays are a wonderful time to show them that you love them. Children love to celebrate the love they have for their kids by giving them little gifts. Giving your children the opportunity to decorate a Christmas stocking for their favorite dog or cat is a fun way to celebrate with your pets.

Head to your local store and pick up a stocking or make one of your own with some felt or velvet. Having a plain red and white stocking is a little boring. With a little bit of time and effort, you can transform this stocking into a great holiday decoration. Be sure to grab the kids and have them all help out since the pets are a part of the family.

Here are a few supplies you will need:
ï‚• Felt in different colors. Try to get some felt that matches your dog or cat.
ï‚• Leather for the collar and a bell or small heart to use as the dog tags.
ï‚• Glue and glitter
ï‚• Stickers

To get started with your decorations, you need to come up with the theme and design of how you want it to look. For this article, let’s create a Christmas stocking for a dog. The basic design of the stocking will be a felt cutout of your dog along with some white bones to attach all over the stocking.

In the middle of the stocking, attach a cut out of your dog. Then glue some Milk Bones to the stocking or some white felt bone cutouts on the stocking. When you pick out a stocking, avoid using the same color for any of the stocking decorations. Once the dog is attached in the middle, create a small collar with a small piece of leather or black felt. Then get a small bell to attach to the collar or you can get a small dog bone to attach to the collar with the dogs name on it.

Sew or glue the small dog bones to the stocking and then attach some holly to the dog bones or you can glue some bells to them. Another decoration you might consider adding to the stocking is a small cutout of your dog’s favorite toy. Some craft stores sell miniature dog bones that you can use as your dogs favorite chew toy. If the stocking is large enough, you can even attach your dog’s new toy to the stocking with some safety pins and then you can give it to them on Christmas morning.

Instead of attaching a small toy to the stocking or a cut out of your dog, you can also attach a picture of your dog. A lot of places will printout a picture of your dog onto fabric or you can get an iron-on image to attach to the stocking. If you attach a picture, be sure to add a Santa hat to your pets head to add to the holiday spirit.

Now for the finishing touch, add your dog’s name to the stocking. Use some glue to write your dog’s name and then sprinkle some glitter across it to make it stand out. Another option is to cut out your dog’s name with some felt and glue it across the top of center of your dogs stocking. A fun way to change up the way your dog’s name is attached to the stocking is to use some ribbon to write their name on the stocking. Some stockings even have dog bones in the shape of the name of the dog attached. Hang the stockings high enough so that your dog can’t reach it.
