Did you miss out on the after Christmas clearance sales last year? If you did miss the clearance sales last year and you need Christmas stockings, you’re in luck!
You need not spend $20, or more, on a Christmas stocking. You can make your own with some fabric and some construction paper.
Here are some fun ways to decorate your Christmas stocking on a budget and the supplies you need to get started:
- Felt, in a few different colors
- Construction paper
- Cookie cutters
- Scissors
- Elmer’s Glue
- Glitter
- Stickers
- Stencils
To get started with your stocking, pick a color scheme. You can go with the traditional Christmas colors of red, green, white and gold or you can choose some unique colors like blue, pink, orange and purple. Pick the basic color for your stocking. Let’s say you want a red stocking. Once you have chosen the base color, pick the color for a few of the decorations that will go on the stocking.
Using cookie cutters, to cut shapes out of the different fabric. Don’t use the same color for the base of the stocking and the decorations, lest they blend in and it will not stand out the way you want it to.
To make your stocking unique, create a theme for your stocking. Some fun themes you can add to the stocking include:
- Nativity scene
- Santa Claus in his sleigh with his reindeer pulling him
- A Christmas tree with ornaments and presents
- Christmas carolers
- The Grinch
At your local craft store, purchase some small stuffed snowmen, reindeer and other cute Christmas decorations. To add even more character to the stocking, use some cinnamon sticks and holly to create a Christmas wreath on your stocking. Get some stickers and some glitter to make your stocking sparkle. Use the Elmer’s glue to write your name or to dot the Christmas stocking like snowflakes. Sprinkle the glitter on top of the glue and give it some time to dry.
Some small candy canes can also add some uniqueness to your stocking. You will need a glue gun and glue sticks in order to glue the candy canes to the felt stocking. Velvet is also another great fabric to use for the body of the stocking.
Use the cookies cutters to trace shapes on the felt, then cut out all of the pieces. Fabric glue or a glue gun will work the best to glue the felt pieces to the stocking. A fun way to add your name to the stocking is to cut out the fabric pieces in different letters and then glue them to the stockings. Instead of putting your name across the top of the stocking, mix it up a bit and have it go across the body of the stocking. Glue it onto the stocking in a diagonal pattern to add some character to your stocking.
When you are gluing items to the stocking, you should use some cardboard to put inside the stocking so the sides don’t stick together. Try using an egg carton because it will open up the inside of the stocking to allow air inside so it can dry faster.
Add some bells and small ornaments to the stocking to make it look unique. Use some ribbon to create a loop on the top corner of the stocking so you can hang it over the mantle. Another easy way to decorate Christmas stockings on a budget is to go to a dollar store and purchase some stockings and then decorate them with thrifty decorations.
