While it’s nice to get a card on Valentine’s Day, receiving a homemade card is a little more special and personal than a regular store-bought card. Making a homemade Valentine’s Day card doesn’t have to be complicated, all you need to do is search around for some family photos, some lace, ribbon, cardstock paper, scissors, glue, and some scrap booking paper.

To create a homemade Valentine’s Day card, you need to choose the theme of what you want your card to be. Do you want to have it be a light-humored card, a romantic card, or a sensitive card? Picking the theme will help you personalize the card to the gift recipient.

In order to get started, grab a piece of red cardstock paper. This will be the body of the card. Fold the piece of cardstock paper in half. Now, grab some lace and glue it to the cover of the card. The lace should be white or another color instead of red. Once you have the lace glued on and it has been able to dry, cut out a big red heart from another piece of red cardstock or you can cut a family picture into the shape of a heart. Glue this right onto the center of the cover of the card. Decorate the rest of the card with stickers, ribbon, and some glitter. Once you have completed this, you should write a nice love note on the inside of the card. Depending upon who the card is for, scent the card with a little perfume or some wax.

Are you ready to sew? Stitching together a Valentine’s Day card is a lot of fun. Grab your cardboard and a large piece of fabric to cover it with. Now, what you need to do is wrap the fabric around the cardstock and sew the edges together. If you aren’t great at sewing, you can always glue it onto the cardstock. Once you have finished this, get some red or white felt and cut two pieces into the shape of a heart. What you need to do is sew the edges together and leave the top portion open so you can stuff it full of some cotton. Sew this together and you should have a small stuffed heart. Glue this heart onto the cover of the Valentine’s Day card. On the top of the heart, glue a small family picture to it. If you don’t want to include the picture here, you can always glue it to the inside of the card. Consider using multiple types of fabric to stitch together to give the card a unique look.

Matte a family picture to give away as a Valentine’s Day gift. Grab a recent snapshot of your family and then get some white and red cardstock paper. Leave one piece as an 8×10, this will be the base for the picture. Using the other piece, cut it a bit smaller from the 8×10 and glue it onto the other piece of cardstock. Now, glue your family picture to the middle of it. If you don’t like this style of matting, you can always go with the traditional approach which is to place the photo down first and then glue the matting to the top of it. Either way, you want to decorate the matting with some stickers, fabric and other items that are related to Valentine’s Day. Don’t forget to include the year somewhere on the matte so the gift recipient remembers which year they received this wonderful keepsake from you. Use a little glitter to rub around the matte to make it sparkle and stand out from all the other family pictures in your home.
