A clay pot reindeer is a wonderful decoration for the holiday season, and a fun craft to make with your children. It is a fast, fun, project that can keep you and your children entertained for an afternoon, and provide you with a cute holiday gift or decoration.
The things you will need to make a clay pot reindeer include:
- A clay pot, 3-inch usually works best.
- Brown spray paint
- Silver or gold garland.
- Red pom poms
- Ribbon in holiday colors or prints.
- Bells.
- Small googly eyes.
- A glue gun
- Scissors.
The instructions to make a great clay pot reindeer are to follow:
Step one:
Paint the pots.
This is best to have an adult do. You will want to do this ahead of time so that they are all of the way dry before your children are ready to do the craft. Use the brown spray paint to coat the pots. Then set them out to dry. Let them dry thoroughly before moving on to step two.
Step two:
Put the bell on a ribbon.
On this step, you will want to choose your ribbon, and cut it to 12 inches in length. Use that length to string the bell on. Make sure the bell is right in the middle of the ribbon. You are then going to tie a knot at the bell, and another half way down the ribbon.
Step three:
Create your ribbon loop.
You are going to want to string the loop through the clay pot, and tie another knot at the top of the ribbon. This will make your reindeer jingle when it is moved. Or, you can use it to create a loop to hang the reindeer on a tree like an ornament.
Step four:
Glue the eyes, nose, and antlers on.
This is where you will be using the glue gun, so it might be best if an adult does this step. You will want to put glue on the top of the pot to ensure the ribbon with the bell on it will stay put. Now use the glue gun to put two eyes on the pot, a red pom pom as the ball, and the garland as antlers.
Step four:
Decorate more as wanted.
The last step is to let your kids have fun with their clay pot reindeer. You can give them some permanent markers, and allow them to draw a mouth on, or write the year on so that in the future they know what year they made their decoration. You can let them write their names on the inside, or whatever they want to draw on it. This is a project for them, so let them decorate it as they wish, even if it does not really look very festive.
