finger-paintingIf you are trying to teach your child the alphabet, a simple way to do so is to make an alphabet collage. Your child can enjoy a little arts and crafts time while they are learning the letters of the alphabet and words that are associated with those words. Here are a few suggestions to try when you are making an alphabet collage:

Box Collage
Do you have a bunch of old shoe boxes lying around the house? Put them to good use by turning them into alphabet boxes. Try to get at least 5-10 shoe boxes for your children to decorate. Divide the number of shoe boxes you have by 26 to see how many letters each shoebox will represent. Lets say you have 4 letters per box, what you will do is have your children look through magazines and catalogs to find objects that start with the letters A, B, C and D. Gather a bunch of images that start with each letter so you can arrange the pictures on the outside of the box and then laminate a bunch and place them inside the shoebox. Now you will want to cut out the letters A B C and D from card stock or write them down on separate pieces of paper. Your children will need to identify all of the images that relate to that particular word and attach them to the paper when you are playing with the shoe boxes. Continue doing this for the other boxes to create a fun and exciting alphabet collage that your children will love.

Scrapbook

A simple way to make an alphabet collage is to create a scrapbook with your kids. Pull out 26 sheets of paper and write a different letter of the alphabet on each sheet. Have your kids go through magazines, catalogs, old books and online to find a bunch of pictures to glue onto the different pages. The images they choose must start with the letter represented on that particular page. Scrapbooks are nice because you can leave them in the car and they will entertain your children on long-distance travels along and when they need to sit for extended periods of time.

To make the scrapbook a learning challenge, choose a particular theme for the scrapbook. This way you children will need to search for pictures that relate to the letter and to the theme. For example tell them they can only find images of fruit to use in the book. This will test their brain power as they will need to think hard to come up with fruit that matches each letter.

Finger Painting
What child doesn’t love to paint? Finger painting is a great way to create an alphabet collage. Have your child finger paint all the letters of the and once they are dry, they can draw in images that relate to that particular letter. You may consider having them draw in those images before they start finger painting as they may have a desire to paint those images as well.

Decorative Letters
Another fun way to create unique alphabet collages is to create decorative letters. Spread a thin layer of glue over each letter and then have your children sprinkle glitter and other things over the letter. Kids love craft time, especially when they get a chance to get messy. Hide the letters throughout your home and have your children go on a letter hunt. When they find a letter, ask them to identify objects in your home that start with the letter. If you don’t have objects that relate to the letter, you can also have them just tell you a few things that are related to the letters.
