Books to Read:

Louanne Pig in the Mysterious Valentine

By Nancy Carlson

The Night before Valentine’s Day

By Natasha Wing

I Love You Plant

You will need:

Bright Color Paper

Green Pipe cleaners

Small Clay Pot

Florist Foam

Shredded Green Create Paper

Markers or Paint

Start by tracing the child’s hand on the bright paper. You will need to cut out two of each hand. Carefully glue the two hands together, but fold forward the middle and ring finger on both hands and glue them down. This will make your hand look like the “I love you” sign from both front and back. In the middle of the two hands you will stick a green pipe cleaner for a stem. Have the child color or paint the clay pot. You can then add the foam piece to the clay pot and stick the handprint flowers inside the foam. Top off the pot with shredded green create paper.

*Don’t forget to put the year on the bottom of the clay pot. This way you will know what year the hands were made.

Rice Krispy Treats

You will need:

Cooking Spray

Funnel

Marshmallows

Butter

Rice Krispy Cereal

Start by preparing rice crispy treats as found on the box. Line the inside of the funnel w/ cooking spray. Fill the funnel with the Rice Krispy mixture. Let this sit for a couple of minutes until the shape has formed. No you should be able to gently pop out the Rice Krispy out of the funnel. Cover with foil. You can add a special message on a strip of paper and have it coming out the top like a chocolate kiss, too. Kids can easily help with this project since there is no real cooking involved.

Groundhog Puppet

You will need:

Foam Cup

Brown Construction Paper

Popsicle Stick

Glue

Brown Pom Pom

Googly Eyes

Start by having the child cover the foam cup with glue. Then you can cover the outside of the cup with brown construction paper. Take a Popsicle stick and glue a brown pom pom on the end. Have the child put some googly eyes on the pom pom. Have an adult make a small slit in bottom of cup and put the Popsicle stick in the slot. The “groundhog” will now be able to peek out of the hole to see his shadow.

Ground Hog Nest

You will need:

Cooking Spray

Shredded Wheat Squares

Instant tube Biscuits

Raisins

Approx: ½ cup butter

Approx: 1 cup brown sugar

Start by spraying the pan with cooking spray. Crumble 4 to 5 large shredded wheat squares. Gently press the biscuits into the shredded wheat. Poke raisins into them like eyes of the little groundhogs. Sprinkle brown sugar over the top of the entire pan. Drizzle melted butter over the top and bake for 15 to 20 minutes on 350º. This will look like groundhogs that are snug into their little nests.
