With the start of a new school year, September brings lots of possibilities for preschool themes. Preschoolers are among the most eager of learners, and will be excited to try the new activities and learn the information, that each theme offers. Whether you are looking for a theme for a classroom of preschoolers, or just want some fun activities with your own child, these themes will open a new world of learning. Here are some September themes for preschool-
- National Dog Week/September 19-25th–Most preschoolers love dogs. However, if there are any children who may have been frightened by a dog, you should be sensitive to that. In addition, keep in mind that a theme about dogs, can include: pet care, pet safety, and even help teach alphabet and numbers. Here are some dog themed activities for your preschooler to take part in.

Puppet shows-There are many different types of dog puppets that are available. The children will be enthralled to listen to the dogs talk about safety, alphabet or anything dog related. The children can also take turns doing puppet shows, which helps to develop communication and social skills.
Paper Bag Dogs-This easy to assemble craft is especially good for preschool age children.
You will need:
Brown paper bag (lunch size)
Template of dog puppet (available online)
Crayons or markers
Scissors
Glue
Print a template of a dog puppet, from off the computer. Each child will need one. Have them color the template and then cut out the pieces. Most templates are a head and body. Have the child glue the head to the flap part of the bag. The body should be glued underneath. Once the pieces are attached to the bag, the puppet is ready to be played with.
“D” Food ideas-For a treat you can assemble, or have the kids bring in foods that begin with D. Donuts, Danishes, dates, deviled eggs, dill pickle, dip, and dumplings are only a few of the possibilities.
Dog food for kids-Preschoolers will love the humor of thinking they are eating dog food.
You will need:
9 cups of square shaped cereal
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Begin by measuring the cereal; into a large bowl and set aside. In 1-quart microwavable bowl, microwave chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on high 1 minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon re-sealable food-storage plastic bag. Add powdered sugar. Seal bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Dish out in small bowls to your preschool age “doggies”.
- Autumn-Fall begin on September 23rd–You can choose to take this theme into October of dedicate just this day to learning about autumn. Best of all there is lots of choices at both your craft store and local school supply store, to help set the mood, for this theme.

Field Trip-If the leaves are changing in your area, then a simple walk outdoors can make a great field trip, to see the effects of Autumn. The preschoolers can gather leaves for decorating, or for crafts, as well.
Painting with Leaves-Preschoolers are delighted to learn that they don’t need a brush to paint with. The leaves gathered from the field trip can be used here.
You will need:
Leaves of several different sizes that have prominent veins
Several color of paint, in autumnal colors
Paper plates
Craft paper
Pour one color of paint onto each paper plate. Have the children dip the leaves vein side down, into the paint and then press firmly onto their paper. These can make lovely leaf pictures.
