Once you have the book bag ready, there will have to be some books to go in it. You can make homemade book covers to protect and personalize your child’s books. Any kind of paper can be used to make a book cover. You can use wrapping paper, old paper bags, or butcher paper. What’s important is that the paper is relatively sturdy.
Cut out a piece of paper big enough to go around the book with about two inches to spare on either side. Once the paper is cut out, you can help your child decorate. Decorations may include drawings or pictures cut out of magazines. If you have a color printer, the Internet is a terrific resource for getting pictures to put on the book covers. You can go to a search engine and click on “images” from the menu. Then you type in your key word or words and you will see thumbnails of different options.

If your kid loves the ocean, you can type in ocean, or if she loves penguins, type in penguins. Help your child learn to use the Internet by monitoring this picture search. This is a good time to teach your child about Internet safety.
Once the book cover is decorated the way your child wants it, you should attach it to the book. Tape down one flap at a time, making sure the book will be able to open and close once you are finished. Make cuts right where the book cover pages leave the binding. You can cut off the extra paper that goes right over the binding and then tape down the other flaps.
