You can make a very interesting coloring page of your own with some markers and a black crayon. To begin you want to color a page of paper with the markers in a bunch of random patterns. You want to try to fill the page with color. Don’t worry about trying to make something recognizable just yet, you will do that later on, right now you are adding the color and interest that you will need to really make the craft come alive in the next steps. After you have filled your page with color, take your black crayon and color over the entire page. What you are trying to do is create a layer of black wax over the colorful page. Once you have colored the whole page black, you can start the fun. Use an unsharpened pencil or a mechanical pencil that doesn’t have the lead exposed to “color” the page by scratching off the black to expose the colors underneath. Make designs that mimic shapes that you might find in our galaxy. Make swirls, circles, rings, etc. Once you have tried this craft you may want to try making another scratch page using slightly different materials (i.e. you can add your colors with paints or color over the top of them with crayons of more than just one color). Have fun trying new things and experimenting. Note: this makes a good outdoor craft because as you color and scratch off the black crayon you will leave a fair amount of residual crayon dust behind.
Make Your Own Coloring Group
Kids learn from each other. You can take advantage of the fun there is to be had with coloring by having a play date where coloring takes on an astronomy theme. Have each child use a plain pencil or pen to outline a picture that they can then pass to someone else to color. Have everyone make the “colorful galaxy” craft mentioned above, but have all the pages passed to someone else before scratching the black off to create your design. This way, the children are surprised by the colors and patterns that they will find.
