Hand and Foot TurkeyThere are several very popular birds in America. Of course there is the national bird, the bald eagle. New Yorkers have pigeons and you cannot visit the beach without encountering some seagulls. But, there is one bird that shares the spotlight with one of our favorite holidays, Thanksgiving. That bird is the turkey. The turkey is definitely in the spotlight when November rolls around and in addition to having that famous turkey dinner; there are lots of fun crafts that can be done with this special bird in mind. Here are just a few ideas to get you started thinking about your own thanksgiving bird crafts.

Hand and Foot Turkey:

You can make a turkey or a turkey wreath out of handprints by simply using paint to make a handprint or by tracing the hand and then cutting the hand print out. Using the print of the thumb as the head of the turkey and the rest of the fingers as the feathers of the turkey, decorate your Thanksgiving bird. You can use the individual birds as decorations or as place cards for your Thanksgiving meal.

Make a whole flock of Thanksgiving turkeys and arrange them in a circle to make a Thanksgiving turkey wreath out of handprints. Use these principles to make a hand and foot turkey by cutting out six hand prints on brightly colored paper. Now, trace each of your feet on paper and cut them out just as you did with the handprints (you may want to use a more neutral paper color as these prints will form the turkey’s body). Use glue to attach the two feet cutouts with the top of the foot overlapping (the shape should be thinner at the top and bump out where the heels are at the bottom). Now glue the hand prints on to the back of the body in a fanned out design so that they form the feathers of the bird. Add wiggly eyes and other facial features and you have your hand and foot turkey.
