Here are a few simple ways to create an alphabet collage with your child:
Get a large piece of card stock or a piece of cardboard.
You will need some glue along with some old magazines, catalogs and pictures.
Using card stock, cut out all the letters in the alphabet. Use white card stock so your children can color in the letters.
Have your children go through the magazines, catalogs and pictures to find things that start with each letter. For example, if you are working on the letter “S”, have your kids cut out a picture of a shoe or a soccer ball.
Divide the oversized piece of card stock or cardboard into 26 equally sized boxes. Have your children arrange the different objects for each letter into the appropriate letter box and then glue the letter over the pictures. This is a simple alphabet collage that you can easily create in just 60 minutes with your children.
Another fun way to make an alphabet collage is to cut out all the letters of the alphabet from felt. Felt works best as you can attach it to a felt board when you are teaching your children. Have your children go through magazines and find images that begin with each letter, bananas for “B” and a fox for “F”, as examples. Using the felt, glue the pictures to a piece of felt so it will attach to a felt board. Once you have all the letters done, have your children attach one letter to the felt board and then identify all of the images that go with that letter. This is a great activity for older children that need a little extra help with learning the alphabet. The nice thing about this alphabet collage is that you can neatly pack it up into a baggie and place it in a drawer when you’re done.
A simple alphabet collage you can create is to cut out all the different letters of the alphabet and then have your children decorate the letters with objects that begin with that letter. You might even consider printing each letter on a sheet of paper and then having your children fill in the balloon letters with the different objects and things that are related to that letter. This is a simple way to work on letters with younger children like toddlers that don’t quite have the ability to use scissors and glue yet. If you use fabric, have them help you glue the letters and pictures to the paper. This is a lot of fun for them as they love to help you with everything you do.
Children love to paint and you can make a fun alphabet collage using paint. Let your children do this project outside so they can enjoy the weather as they work on creating an alphabet collage. Get a package of card stock and draw a letter on each sheet. Now have your child paint different images that begin with each letter on the letter. To make your alphabet collage eccentric, use spray paint to color the letter first and then once it has dried have your kids attach pictures and images to that letter to create a unique collage.
