Bottle Cap Brooch –This project makes a unique brooch using a bottle cap. If children are doing this project it works best for older children who have a little more advanced crafting skills.

Materials Needed:

Pin back (1 1/2″)–(make sure pin back is at least 1/4″ smaller than bottle cap base.)
Acid-free adhesive glue that dries hard and clear
Acid-free hard paper
Small paint brush
Decorative paper (acid-free)
Bottle cap (metal juice bottle cap can make for a more interesting jewelry design!)
Variety of beads (glass, wooden, ceramic)
Gold acrylic paint
High gloss spray paint or gloss medium
Plastic clothes pins to use as clamps to hold glued pieces together

Instructions for the project: Take the clean metal bottle cap and coat it with acrylic gold paint. Cover only the parts of the brooch that will show in the finished design. Let the coated bottle cap dry completely. Cut out a piece of hard paper in a round shape the same size of the bottle cap. Set aside. Cut out a piece of decorative paper the same size as your round piece of hard paper and glue the two pieces together. This will make an attractive back for the brooch design. Glue the gold painted bottle cap to the hard round piece of art board (back to back–bottle cap underside adheres to the plain hard paper side of hard paper base). You can use the plastic clothes pins to hold the pieces together until glue dries. Pour a small amount of glue in the center of the front of the brooch. It helps if the front center of the metal bottle cap is slightly concave. Sprinkle some beads into the pool of glue. Let the glued beads dry completely. It is important to use glue that dries hard and clear. After the brooch is completely dry, glue a pin back to the backside of brooch about a third down from the top of the back of brooch. Let the glued pin back dry completely. In a well-ventilated area, spray the front and back of brooch with a high gloss acrylic spray. After it dries it is ready to wear.
