Sewing has made a comeback in the twenty first century. Whether it’s due to the changing economy or a few of television’s reality shows we’ll never know. Whatever the cause for such a surge in sewing it has become more and more popular among people everywhere. Sewing crafts have also become part of the hype and people are either taking it up as a hobby or trying to make a living off of it. Coming up with sewing craft ideas is not the easy part about making the crafts. Where can you find new and innovative ideas? What kind of craft can you make that people will buy? What types of craft make great gifts? These are all important questions when considering what type of sewing craft you want to make.

Beginner Sewing craft ideas

When you are just starting out in the sewing industry you want to make sure that you start with sewing crafts that are appropriate for your skill level. Many people make the mistake of trying their hand at sewing crafts that are far too advanced for their skill level. What ends up happening is they get half way through (if they’re lucky), get bored or discouraged because it’s taking so long and then just quit. Then they do it all over again thinking that a new project will work out better. You end up with unfinished projects all over the house and swear you’ll never try to make any type of sewing craft again. Here are a few beginner sewing craft ideas to help get you started and keep you interested:

•Handbags. Now when I say handbags I’m not talking about those intricate, detailed, and complicated handbags you might see in the Tommy Hilfiger or Prada stores. I’m talking about a simple handbag that can be used to carry things you might keep in your purse, diapers (if you have children), or little knick knacks for your kids. You can buy simple handbag patterns and easily sew a handbag by following the pattern. The key to making this easy is finding a pattern that is two dimensional, not three. Save the three dimensional bags for another project.

•Bandannas. Bandannas are so easy it’s amazing. You can buy or probably find some bandannas lying around the house to use. If you know how to do a simple straight stitch you can embroider yours or someone else’s initials onto the bandanna. You can also use a decorative stitch to go around the edges of the bandanna to make it as personal as you would like.

•Cross stitch. Most cross stitch projects you can find in any craft store and they are ready to go. There is no question as to the colors of thread to use or how it is suppose to look. You can buy very simple and quick cross stitch projects and when you feel ready you can buy large projects. All you have to know how to do is count your squares and sew an “x” which they give instructions on how to do it in the cross stitch packet.

Sewing Craft ideas to use as gifts

Some people take up the art of sewing because they want to be able to give gifts to others that they have put the time and effort into making. Obviously the best gift idea is largely dependant on the receiver, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

•Small Pouches. This may not seem like a good gift but pouches are quick and simple and can be used for a lot of things. You can put game pieces in them so they don’t get lost or kids can use them to keep their money in. You can also make pouches to hold things such as glasses or breakables.

•Pajama bottoms. Although sewing and receiving clothes may not be quite as popular as it used to be, pajama bottoms have never really gone out of style and just about everyone loves to get them. Everyone wants a nice pair of pajama bottoms they can lounge around in so if you know someone that needs a pair then you might want to try making a pair for them.

•Stuffed toys, animals or dolls. If you’re looking for something kids can use but won’t break then try making a stuffed animal or toy. Little girls love dolls and when you sew them they are more likely to withstand the rough little hands that take them outside or to bed with them.

This only touches the tip of the iceberg when it comes to sewing craft ideas. There are millions more out there to choose from. Try looking in your local craft store, asking friends, family or neighbors, or looking online for more great ideas.
