You want to teach your child the importance of staying hydrated right? Why not let them make their own water bottle holders this summer? You can make bottle holders that attach to backpacks or that they wear around their waists. Whichever kind of water bottle holder you make, it will be a fun craft activity for you and your child.
One of the best things to make a water bottle holder out of is an old shirt. Take a sixteen-ounce water bottle, and try it out on some of your child’s old shirts. You will use the shirtsleeve to hold the water bottle. Pick out a few shirts that have fun fabric and then make sure that the bottle will fit nicely in the sleeve.
Once you have found the right shirt you will want to cut off the shirtsleeve. Turn the sleeve inside out and sew up the smallest side. This will leave you with a little sack that the water bottle will fit in.
Next, decorate the holder. Sewing and gluing objects like buttons and sequins onto the holder make good decorations. You can cut out pieces of felt to make a face and sew those on, or you can cut out flowers. Let your children be creative and pick out whatever design she likes.
Remind the child that if the water bottle holder is going to be attached to a back pack that they won’t be able to see the backside. Instead of decorating all the way around, they should only decorate about ¾ of the pocket.
Your sewing skills will really determine how the water bottle holder gets attached to the backpack. If you are a competent sewer, go ahead and sew it on with a needle and thread. If that feels a little out of your league, you can fix the pocket to the backpack with safety pins. Use at least three pins along the top of the water bottle container to make sure that it hangs right and isn’t ripped off.
