- 1 cup white glue
- food coloring, your choice of color (optional: coloring can stain!)
- 1 cup liquid starch
Pour glue and coloring in plastic container. Stir until color is thoroughly mixed in. Add starch a little at a time, stirring with a spoon or kneading with your fingers as mixture thickens. Keep stirring until mixture holds together like putty.
Test with your fingers: if too sticky, add more starch in small amounts until mass is smooth and rubbery.

HI I tryed to make Gak an it didn’t work out right
I started with 1 cup white glue and 1 cup liquid starch
it is smooth but not rubbery.
so I add more glue then it is too sticky so I add more liquid starch then it it not rubbery so I am not sure what I did wrong in the mix I have 4cups of glue and about 3cups of liquid starch I hope you can help me to make the gak
It really helps if you use your hands. If to sticky use very little starch and if to watery (falling apart) use more glue.
What is Gak???
This recipe won’t be solid like silly putty. It is more on the sticky. It will stick to clothes if it comes in contact with it. Cold hands works best. As you play with it it will become less sticky. May I suggest starting with no food coloring as when it starts to dry out color on it with washable markers. It creats a cool tye-dye affect.
Ive used bio putty and paint and it came out GREAT!!! Ive also used cornstartch and water , that WORKED TOO!
I’m writing in response to Shawn who wrote 3 years ago (already!)… I took a “Mommy and Me” class with my son, and the teacher gave us a recipe to make gak, and it says on the recipe to use Elmer’s Glue, not any glue… However, I didn’t try the recipe yet so I can’t confirm this…
