Princess Diana of Wales is one of the most beloved women in the history due in large part to her selfless nature and drive to give a voice to those who could not speak for themselves. Diana was married to Prince Charles, heir to the British throne. Her actions and the contribution she made to humanity defined her life.
1. Charity WOrk
Princess Diana’s charity work was high-profile, significant and influential to the entire world. Her influence and charisma enabled her to champion the banning of landmine use across the world.
2. Landmine Campaign
Her campaign against the use of landmines won the Nobel Prize in 1997, the same year she died. She focused on the effect landmines have on people and on society long after a war is over, when people tread and children play where battles were fought. She is believed to have influenced the signing of the Ottawa Treaty, which banned the use of anti-personnel landmines, though it was signed after her death.
3. Compassionate Care For AIDS Victims
Another of her most significant campaigns was giving compassionate care to AIDS victims. In the 1970’s and 80’s, it was believed that AIDS could be communicated simply through touching someone affected with it. Princess Diana was one of the first of many celebrities to show the world through her actions that all people deserve compassion and love rather than isolation and disdain.
4. Royal Family Duties
Soon after her marriage to Prince Charles, Diana began to take part in the royal family duties. She represented the Queen on several visits abroad including the funeral of Princess Grace of Monaco. She traveled the world and made her case for good causes and contributions that would help others.
5. Televised Royal Wedding
Nearly 600,000 people lined the parade routed and another 750 million watched on television as an English girl was married to the heir to the British throne for the first time in over 300 years.
6. Divorce
Amid rumors or an unhappy marriage and infidelity, Diana and Charles decided to divorce. The separation of Charles and Diana was officially announced on December 9th, 1992. Queen Elizabeth II asked them to end their marriage in 1995 and, after some stalling and divorce formalities, they were legally divorced in August of 1996.
7. Charm and Beauty
Princess Diana was one of the most beloved of celebrities in the world. She was often described as the most photogenic, and, indeed, one of the most photographed women in the world. Her charm and beauty won her a place in the hearts of millions of people all over the world.
8. Tragic Death
Just after midnight of August 31st, 1997, Princess Diana was killed in an automobile accident in the Seine Tunnel in Paris. The announcement devastated the entire world.
9. Tributes to Good Deeds
Many books have been written about her achievements and success in life and pay tribute to the great things she has done for mankind and for the British Royal Family. After her death, there were requests made that she be nominated for sainthood for the numerous acts of kindness she engaged in.
10. William and Harry, A Legacy Lives On
Princess Diana and Prince Charles were the parents of two children, both boys. William was their first born and Henry was the second. William is now the heir to the British throne. Diana’s legacy lives on through the efforts of her two sons.
