Halloween is celebrated each year on October 31. A mix of Celtic, Catholic and Christian traditions, Halloween is thought to ultimately be taken from the festival of the dead, Parentalia, or the Celtic Samhein, pronounced ‘sow-in’. Many traditions that celebrate the dead, the harvest and the end of summer have been blended over hundreds of years into what we know today as Halloween. The actual word “Halloween” is one part Catholic ‘All Hallow’s Eve’, or the evening before All Saints Day, and one part Celtic ‘Samhein’.
