Here is a handprint craft that can help you showcase your child’s handprints and one of the beautiful poems listed above.
Handprint Plaque-You can make a mold of the child’s handprint in Plaster of Paris and then write one of these poems on the other side, when it is completely dry.
What you will need:
- Plaster of Paris
- Large plastic bowl (like a big cottage cheese container) and stirrer (to mix the plaster)
- An aluminum pie plate or a plastic lid
- A large paper clip
- Disposable plastic gloves
- Permanent marker
Directions for the project: Keep in mind that this is a messy craft, and is best done outside if at all possible. An adult should mix the Plaster of Paris, in the container. Keep in mind that the plaster should be stiff, but also creamy. You should wear gloves when you are doing this. Carefully pour the plaster into a flat container. Have the child quickly make a handprint in the plaster. Wash the child’s hand immediately afterwards. Before the Plaster of Paris completely hardens, push a partly unfolded paper clip into the plaster or use a straw to make a hole in the plaster, in order to be able to hang the plaque. The plaster will be completely dry in about a day, but you can take it out of the molding container after about 20 minutes. When it is completely dry you can write one of the poems on the back.
