Writing A Love Letter

Mothers seem to have been an inspiration for poetry throughout the ages. Everyone from professional writers, philosophers and everyday kids has taken up the pen to write in praise of their mother. Whether you are looking for a lovely poem for a Mother’s Day program or want to make a card extra special, these poems will do just that. Some poems are perfect for children to memorize as a tribute to their mother, while others will both inspire and entertain. Here are some Mother’s Day poems-

A Mother’s Love Determines How- This is a lovely poem expressing the devotion and sacrifice of our mothers.

A mother’s love determines how, we love ourselves and others.
There is no sky we’ll ever see, not lit by that first love.
Stripped of love, the universe would drive us mad with pain;
But we are born into a world that greets our cries with joy.
How much I owe you for the kiss that told me who I was!
The greatest gift–a love of life–Lay laughing in your eyes.
Because of you my world still has, the soft grace of your smile;
And every wind of fortune bears, the scent of your caress.
By- Turlough O’Carolan

“Happy Mother’s Day” Means More-This special little poem could be memorized by a child, as a tribute to his mother.

“Happy Mother’s Day” means more, than have a happy day.
Within those words lie lots of things we never get to say.
It means I love you first of all, then thanks for all you do.
It means you mean a lot to me, And that I honor you.
But most of all, I guess it means that I am thinking of
Your happiness on this, your day, with pleasure and with love.

M – O – T – H – E – R-This well known classic, is also well loved. This would delight any mother in a card or spoken presentation.

“M” is for the million things she gave me,
“O” means only that she’s growing old,
“T” is for the tears she shed to save me,
“H” is for her heart of purest gold;
“E” is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
“R” means right, and right she’ll always be,
Put them all together, they spell
“MOTHER,
“A word that means the world to me.
By-Howard Johnson

Only One Mother-This delightful poem would be lovely copied inside a handmade Mother’s Day card.
Hundreds of stars in the pretty sky, Hundreds of shells on the shore together,
Hundreds of birds that go singing by, Hundreds of lambs in the sunny weather.
Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn, Hundreds of bees in the purple clover,
Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn, but only one mother the world wide over.

If I knew As a Child-If you are an adult looking for a contemporary sentiment to express your feelings, this poem may be saying all the right things.

If I knew as a child what I know now, Mom, I probably wouldn’t have made things so hard for you.
I would have understood that you were looking out for my best interest, and
even though it may not have seemed so at the time.
I would have known how difficult it is to let go, to stand back and let someone you love
learn from their mistakes.
I would have realized how fortunate I was to have a mother who was always there for
me, even after an argument, even after I’d said things I shouldn’t have.
While it’s too late for a lot of things, it’s not too late for me to tell you
that I appreciate how loving you are, how giving you’ve always been
and that even though I may not always be good at showing it,
I love you very much.
