Our “Charts, Graphs & Nomographs” page has numerous scientific and engineering graphics that put various different units of measure into perspective. Here is one example graphic found there. It is called “The Scale of Things — Nanometers and more.” Have students select one of these graphics, print it out and then bring it to class to explain for a few minutes to the rest of the class. After class post all the graphics on a board for a week or so. The whole class can learn. For extra credit have students find a second perspective providing graphic from some other source on the Internet or from a text or journal of some type. The depth of understanding students will gain about how big and small their world and universe is from the perspective of various units of measure will open new horizons for them. This is a simple, but powerful exercise. Try it!
