De M.C. Escher Stichting werd door M.C. Escher in 1968 zelf opgericht. Het doel was om zijn nalatenschap te bewaren. Helaas werd een groot gedeelte van de originele collectie in 1981 aan een Amerikaanse kunsthandelaar verkocht en is nu verspreid geraakt over de hele wereld.
