Can you be "spatially disoriented" if you are driving at night in heavy ...
14 Nov 2024 at 5:28am
There are illusions that can get you when driving, but driving is really bad weather is more analogous to VFR into IMC than it is to spatial disorientation. Driving is two dimensional, you can't acquire a false horizon and be in a dive, bank, or climb when you think you're level (you can lose visibility of the road markings, but that's more ...
how do you remember cloud clearances for vfr - Pilots of America
11 Nov 2024 at 5:20pm
1) clear of clouds in class B because you're on a clearance operating under positive separation in class B (i.e you don't have to worry about a plane jumping out from a cloud at you). 2) higher cloud clearances above 10k due to no speed restrictions. 1,000 above and below, 1 mile laterally, 5 miles viz.
Hot plate question - Pilots of America
16 Nov 2024 at 2:26am
NadJ. Jun 10, 2024. #1. In my quest for a twin plane to purchase, I have come across many that come with a 'hot plate' on the windshield installed as part of a STC. My mission (if I can call it that) will never have me flying anywhere near icing so I'm keen to understand what's involved in removing this. Suppose I like a plane but would much ...
American Optical vs Randolph engineering aviators
17 Nov 2024 at 6:17pm
Display Name. Display name: Mantis Toboggan, MD. May 21, 2023. #2. I can't say which is generally considered better but when my prescription changed I replaced a pair by Randolph with one by American Optical and I'm just as happy with the AOs. I've always had glass lenses, non-polarized so can't comment on the rest but will stick with glass/np.
Thoughts on Progressive Lenses For Flying | Pilots of America

Aug 21, 2021. #25. Been using progressive lenses for over 10 years. Flying Eyes did my sunglasses and I have been using them for about 4 years or so with no problems. My current progressives are from Costco optical. I got 2 pair for less than the price of 1 pair from an optical shop.
Are bifocals with no near correction normal? - Pilots of America
14 Nov 2024 at 12:27am
Get a cheap pair from Zenni Optical and experiment. I've been buying my glasses from them for a number of years now. I have bifocals and have been pleased with their product. The measurement between the pupils is something I asked the optometrist to provide me and is something you need to complete the purchase in addition to the prescription.

How fast was the SR71 REALLY?? - Pilots of America
15 Nov 2024 at 8:14pm
Display Name. Display name: Jim - In Texas! Dec 2, 2013. #9. My friend who flew the SR-71 said the normal 'driving around' speed was M3.0, and it could go a bit faster at a greatly increased risk of a catastrophic compressor stall. I'm skeptical that it could go M3.5, the declassified -1 says the max mach was 3.2.

20/40 or better in each eye separately (Snellen equivalent), with or without correction, as measured at 16 inches. Intermediate: First- and Second-Class. 20/40 or better in each eye separately (Snellen equivalent), with or without correction at age 50 and over, as measured at 32 inches. Third-Class.
Cruise at 75% power - Pilots of America
16 Nov 2024 at 6:04pm
As others have posted, it's not percentage of max rpm, it's percentage of power, which for a fixed pitch prop is roughly proportional to the cube root of the rpm. So for 75%, the cube root of .75 is .908, so 75% power for an engine making its full rated power at 2650 (under those particular conditions) will be at 91% of 2650 or 2406 rpm.
