One of the best riddles ever! minor correction to your answer . It is not what would ?my? brother say, but what would YOUR brother say. The version I heard was one door leads to hell and the other to heaven and one guard always tells the truth, the other guard always lies.

When I was 13 I wrote the riddles from The Hobbit on a piece of paper and took it to school with me for a show and tell. 10 years later, I found the piece of paper in a drawer and wrote my first riddle. Now, another 10 years on, I've written 181 riddles. I want all of the riddles to stay true to the original inspiration from The Hobbit.

I have to write my own riddles since my players will Google. Here's a riddle that I've used in both of the D&D games I DM, so it's no longer any use for me; it might as well do someone else some good: There is something I seek. While it is bound, it chooses kings and peasants. When it is freed, it foretells war or woe.

A trap riddle gives you the option of solving it, or getting smacked by the trap. A puzzle lock, even if incredibly complex and confusing, can still be managed by bashing your way through the door with a mallet, alerting everyone nearby to the intrusion. Riddles and puzzles should be methods to bypass threats, not threats in and of themselves.

Just because you can solve these riddles does not mean you're a psychopath (hopefully); you may just think like one :) I had a ton of fun testing my friends with these and figured you guys would too, so I compiled all of the ones I could find here for you. I always thought the point was the riddles being original, not famous. In my head, they never re-used riddles but made new ones based on deducible information. I do agree though that the riddle wouldn't matter as much as being clever or creative enough to give a good answer. You make a good point.
