Kids will love making an extremely cool house or building out of ordinary sugar cubes. These sugar cube houses and buildings can make interesting displays and they can be used for play.
You will need:
- 3 boxes of sugar cubes
- Craft glue
- Colored construction paper
- 14″ by 14″ piece of heavy-duty cardboard
- 12″ by 12″ piece of poster board
- Colored paper napkins
- Pencil
- Scissors
- A ruler
- Clear plastic wrap
- Optional supplies are: small artificial flowers and foliage, natural aquarium gravel, paintbrushes, and acrylic craft paint for decorating the finished house.
Instructions for the project: Start by drawing the foundation for the house or building on the 14″ by 14″ sheet of cardboard by laying out sugar cubes to predetermine the proper location. Keep in mind that the width of the house or building will require 8 sugar cubes, and the length will require 12 sugar cubes. You should lay out sugar cubes for the entire base of the house or building to ensure proper placement. Begin gluing the sugar cubes to the cardboard. Be sure to start with one corner, and subsequently glue down each cube until the entire foundation has been secured to the cardboard. Be sure that you leave an opening for the door by removing 2 or 3 sugar cubes. You will want to square up the foundation if necessary before the glue starts to dry. Continue constructing the house by gluing and stacking sugar cubes. Be sure to leave openings for the windows, and make the structure 8 rows high. Allow the glue to dry completely before continuing. After the glue has dried completely you can begin decorating the structure and assembling the roof. You can use the clear plastic wrap for windowpanes by cutting it out and gluing it to the insides of the window openings. You can also make drapery for the house by fashioning them from colored paper napkins. You can just glue them to the insides of the windows, and make sure they are visible from the outside. Create the roof by folding the 12″ by 12″ piece of poster board squarely in half, put a line of craft glue on each side of the structure and carefully put the roof in place. You can also paint the roof or make shingles if you want too. Just use your imagination and any suitable decorative trim to embellish your sugar cube house.
