Safety first
As with any other candle crafting idea or recipe, there should be adult supervision. Crayon candle crafting is not different. There are many ideas out there you can use. Though, fire and heat safety needs to be one of the main things to consider in your crafting plans.
1.Using a double boiler method for melting wax or candle gel can prevent the wax or gel from catching fire. Candle wax and gel are both very flammable liquids when they are melted.
2.Use caution with the handling of the hot wax.
3.Keep the area for your candle-making free of clutter, spills etc.
Here is a basic crayon candle craft that you can start with.
This is what you will need:
•Crayons (Not washable crayons)
•Candlewicks
•2-pint milk carton
•Ice
You can use a variation to the types of colors of crayons you want to use. You can also choose crayons with glitter in them, or simply the base colored crayons. There is also flexibility in the type of container you use. It can be the milk carton, a jar or other container. As long as it is big enough to hold the wax you melt.
•Here you will want to make sure that the carton, or other container is ready and set aside clean and dry.
•Next you will need to break up and melt the different crayons you choose to go with over a medium heat. This can be either with the colors mixed or separated. Mixing the colors when melting does not always work well. So watch the combinations. Also be sure to remove the paper cover.
•It is best to melt the crayons with the double boiler method. The temperature of the wax does not need to get over 100-200 degrees at the most.
•You can either go with all crayons, or just use regular melting wax, and the crayons for color.
•After it is all melted, you will want to take the piece of your wick and dip one end of it in the wax. Then the wick will need to be stuck to the bottom center of your container. This way the wick will be in the correct place in the candle.
•Now it is time to pour the melted crayons and wax into the container. Be very careful, as this is a hot liquid.
•Finally you will need to let the liquid cool, and now you have your crayon candles.
There are other crayon craft ideas out there that use the wax of the crayon but do not mean that you will be making a candle. Or you can also end up making different types of candles, such as the candles that are made by melting the crayon as listed above.
Instead of pouring the wax into the container, you will dip the wick into the wax and then pulling it out. Then you will dip it in again. This can either in different colors or the same colors. They key will be to make sure you are getting the layered look of the wax onto the wick base. These can be very beautiful hanging crafts for the holidays.
